"Then They Shall Know that I am the Lord
Ezekiel 26:1-6
September 6, 1998
Introduction:
A. Interesting chapter
1. Three basic principles:
2. Tyre is judged and so is Satan. We will not have the time today to address this passage, but I suggest you read it.
3. The accuracy the Biblical prophecy in this section
I. God's Judgment
A. God judges the godly and the ungodly
1. That the ungodly would receive judgment is something most people can understand
2. That the godly would receive judgment is something we don't think about
B. God judges those who rejoice in Israel's struggle (2)
1. Tyre had made comments that showed no compassion for Jerusalem but rather the opposite.
2. 26:2 "Son of man, because Tyre has said of Jerusalem, 'Aha! The gate to the nations is broken, and its doors have swung open to me; now that she lies in ruins I will prosper,'"
3. 1 Cor. 13: 6 "Love does not delight in evil..."
C. God's judgment is for His glory (6. Then they shall know that I am the Lord)
1. Isaiah 42: 8 "I am the LORD; that is my name! I will not give my glory to another or my praise to idols."
2. Any thing less than that would not be of His nature
II. God's Sovereignty
A. God's right to judge
1. His existence is never questioned in the Bible and no arguments are made for His existence. The commentary on this is an observation, Psalm 41:1 "The fool says in his heart, "There is no God."
2. The only one who knows the end and beginning
B. God's word is sure.
1. Look at the prophecies
1. Many nations to participate Vs. 3
2. Walls & towers to be destroyed, the stones, timbers, and dust to be laid in the midst of the waters.
3. Nebuchadrezzer to besiege the city.
a. with a great army of horsemen.
b. destroy the walls and houses and towers.|
c. Note "he" changes to "They" in verse 12
d. They shall make a spoil of your riches (not Neb) & destroy your pleasant houses & lay the stones timbers and dust in the water. To be made like the top of a rock and a place for the fishermen to spread their nets
Never to be rebuilt.
2. Look at the fulfillment:
Nebuchadnezzar
1. 3 yrs later: Nebuchadnezzar laid siege to Tyre in 586 B.C.
2. The people of Tyre were known as the Phoenicians ("Red Men" in Grk). The Phoenician navy ruled the seas from the 12th to the 6th century B.C.
3. Tyre was a very wealthy from trade: Mediterranean to England.
4. The siege lasted for 13 years before Tyre fell
5. After the transfer of wealth to an island
Alexander the Great
1. The new city to prospered at the new location: greatly fortified with walls extending out into the sea to protect the port.
2. 241 years after Nebuchadnezzar had destroyed the old city of Tyre, Alexander the Great began his conquest of the ancient world.
3. His ambition: capture the Persian
4. Before that he headed south to conquer Tyre, fearing that while his troops were in the East engaged in war, that the Phoenician navy may endeavor to invade Greece.
5. He came to Tyre and demanded that the city surrender which demand they refused.
6. The first attempt failed: attacking with ships gathered from nearby ports.
7. He then he took the ruble of the old city of Tyre left by Nebuchadnezzar & built a causeway out to the island.
8. The city was destroyed by Alexander as a warning to other cities that might seek to defy his demands of surrender.
9. After hearing of Tyre's fall, many cities opened their gates in fear to avoid being destroyed.
The Prophecy Fulfilled
1. About 200 years ago some archeologists were watching some fishermen spreading their nets on the bare rocks...
2. 7 x's in this chapter & 866 times in the rest of the Bible the claim is made that the words spoken are from the Lord.
3. What are the chances that Ezekiel could have quessed?
4. It has been conservatively in the book, Science Speaks, Professor Peter Stoner estimated that the chances are about one in 75,000,000.
a. find an error in the Word
b. the old site would make an excellent site for a city, for the ancient springs of Resilen are still flowing there into the sea, an estimated 10,000,000 gallons of water a day. It was this abundance of fresh water that allowed the city of Tyre to hold out against Nebuchadnezzar for 13 years.
Some Observations
A. God is real, He is there, He speaks and He will judge
B. God does love you and has provided a way to do away with all your sins
C. There is a real judgment before a God who has been speaking to you all your life...
